*Eight children are dead after a Shreveport, Louisiana man opened fire across three separate homes Sunday morning. The gunman, identified by police as Shamar Elkins, 31, killed seven of his own children and a cousin in an attack that shook the Cedar Grove community to its core, CNN reports.

The Caddo Parish Coroner’s office identified the victims as Jayla Elkins, 3; Shayla Elkins, 5; Kayla Pugh, 6; Layla Pugh, 7; Markaydon Pugh, 10; Sariahh Snow, 11; Khedarrion Snow, 6; and Braylon Snow, 5. The group included three boys and five girls. Shreveport Police Cpl. Chris Bordelon confirmed the attack was rooted in a domestic situation.

Officers responded just after 6 a.m. CT to reports of shots fired, finding victims spread across two residences on West 79th Street and a third location on Harrison Street. A 13-year-old boy escaped by jumping from a rooftop, leaving him with several fractures but in stable enough condition to recover. State Rep. Tammy Phelps noted that some children also attempted to flee through a back door during the attack.

Elkins targeted his wife first, leaving her in serious condition, before moving to a second residence where he shot the eight minors and another woman — the mother of the eighth child — who was left fighting for her life. Elkins was later killed by officers after stealing a vehicle and fleeing into an adjacent parish.

Local leaders struggled to find words adequate for the scale of the tragedy. “It rattles the entire city,” Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux said. “It affects us all.”

Police Chief Wayne Smith said, “I just don’t know what to say, you know? My heart is just taken aback,” he said. “I just cannot begin to imagine how such an event can occur.”

The killings mark the deadliest mass shooting in the nation since January 2024.

“This is a tragic situation — maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had in Shreveport… It’s a terrible morning,” Arceneaux said.
