Shaquille O’Neal Graduates From LSU With His Second Master’s Degree, His Fourth Degree Overall

Shaquille O’Neal walked across a graduation stage at Louisiana State University on Friday. The four-time NBA champion, Hall of Famer, and business mogul earned a Master of Arts in Liberal Arts from LSU, making it his second master’s degree and the latest entry in an academic resume that has been quietly building for decades.

O’Neal’s thesis, titled “Interdisciplinary Approach to Mentorship through the lens of the epic poem ‘The Odyssey,’” focuses on strengthening mentorship programs with a particular emphasis on athletes.

It is not an abstract academic exercise. It is a direct extension of something Shaq has been thinking about for years: what it means to guide someone through the pressures of high-level competition, and how few people at the top of sports psychology have actually lived through what the athletes they are trying to help are experiencing.

He pursued the program, by his own account, after recognizing a gap in the field. There are few high-level former professional athletes in sports psychology leadership. The people with the academic credentials often lack the firsthand experience.

The people with the experience rarely have the academic framework. Shaq saw that gap and decided to close it from the inside, combining his lived experience as one of the most dominant athletes in the history of American sports with the theoretical grounding that would let him be more effective in helping the next generation.

O’Neal is not a celebrity who enrolled in a graduate program for publicity. He has been building an academic record since his playing days, and that record now spans multiple institutions and multiple disciplines.

He earned his Bachelor of General Studies from LSU, the school where he became a college basketball legend before entering the NBA Draft in 1992. He then earned an MBA from the University of Phoenix. He went on to earn a doctorate in education from Barry University in Florida in 2012, which is why, for the past decade-plus, O’Neal has been technically correct when he insists on being called Dr. O’Neal. The Master of Arts in Liberal Arts from LSU is now his fourth degree.

Four degrees. Four NBA championships. Three NBA Finals MVP awards. Fifteen All-Star selections. A Hall of Fame induction. A business empire. A media career. And a thesis on mentorship and The Odyssey.
