BRAZZAVILLE: TANZANIA has expressed its support for blended finance approaches that will help strengthen the aviation and health sectors in Africa, stating that no single source can bridge the continent’s infrastructure gaps.
Speaking as Tanzania’s Alternate Governor at a conference organized by the African Development Bank (AfDB) on “Platform solutions to Africa’s Transformation: De-risking Aviation and Health systems through Innovative Financing”, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance and Chief Paymaster, Dr Natu El-maamry Mwamba said the proposed solution is practical, affordable and in line with Tanzania’s national priorities.
“We emphasize the use of public and private resources as well as guarantees and support from partners. We cannot rely on one source alone,” said Dr Mwamba,
Adding that it is important to focus on controlling the growing debt in African countries.
Dr Mwamba stressed that air transport is a catalyst for trade, tourism, investment and regional growth and that Tanzania welcomes innovative investments for airport upgrades, security enhancement, development of transportation systems and efficient regional connectivity.
“The goal is to make Tanzania a transport hub for East and Southern Africa.

Similarly, on health services, Dr Mwamba noted that strong health systems are a pillar of productivity, human resources and economic resilience that requires reliable and affordable financing for essential medicines, modern equipment and health infrastructure that can withstand climate change and the environment.
Dr Mwamba explained that Tanzania’s needs for the AfDB are to continue supporting project preparation to identify projects that can attract investors, especially from the private sector, access to guarantees and have more favorable loan terms from Financial Institutions, including the AfDB.
“Tanzania is ready to collaborate with the AfDB and all stakeholders for investments that will have tangible results for our citizens,” said the governor.
The meeting, opened by the President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr. Sidi Ould Tah, brought together development stakeholders, Finance Ministers, Central Bank Governors, investors and government leaders to discuss ways to remove barriers that pose risks to investors and introduce effective financing mechanisms for transport and health projects in Africa.
