Orlando Pirates ended a 14-year wait for the Premiership title after holding their nerve in one of the most exciting final-day races South African football has seen in years.
Mbombela, South Africa (25 May 2026) – For years, Orlando Pirates fans had become used to the “almost” conversations.
Almost title winners. Season after season, the Premiership race often felt wrapped up long before the final whistle of the campaign, leaving very little room for drama by the closing weeks. But this time felt different.
And on the final day of the season, the Pirates finally turned years of frustration into celebration, ending a 14-year wait to lift the league trophy after holding their nerve in one of the most gripping title races South African football has seen in years.
The Buccaneers sealed the 2025/26 Betway Premiership crown with a 2-0 win over Orbit College at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday, completing a season many supporters will probably remember for a very long time.
Unlike previous seasons where the title race was often decided with games to spare, this one went right down to the final day, bringing a level of tension and excitement that kept South African football fans glued to every twist and turn.
And after finally getting over the line, the Pirates also had some fun with the moment online.
The club recently shared a cheeky social media video joking about how they had “kept the receipts” throughout the season. Referencing the criticism, predictions and doubts they had faced along the way from people convinced they would fall short again.
Happy Sunday

Supporters absolutely loved it. After years of hearing why it would not happen, Pirates finally had the perfect response: they made it happen anyway.
The title triumph also completed a domestic treble for the club, adding another layer to what has already become one of the most memorable seasons in recent Pirates history.
Arguably the biggest thing this campaign gave South African football was a title race that stayed alive until the very last day.
