The South African Guide-Dogs Association is encouraging more volunteers to help raise puppies destined for important future roles
South Africa (22 May 2026)- Volunteer puppy raisers often say the experience becomes about much more than just raising a dog.
From puppy training classes to early morning walks and sleepless nights, many end up forming strong friendships with the other families raising puppies alongside them.
That is exactly what one Cape Town volunteer recently reflected on while raising a puppy for the South African Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind.
“When you raise a puppy for the South African Guide-Dogs Association, you get to do it with other like-minded people. Usually, you share the journey with your pup’s litter mates. So the unique bond they have as siblings gets extended to the group of humans raising the pups.”
The organisation recently shared photos of the adorable “N litter” in Cape Town when the puppies were just 10 weeks old. The litter included Nellie, Nikki, Nolan and Ned, all being raised by different volunteer families while going through the same stages together.
The South African Guide-Dogs Association relies heavily on volunteer puppy raisers to help prepare future guide and service dogs for the important work they will one day do.
And while the puppies eventually move on to advanced training, many volunteers often say the experience leaves a lasting impact on them too.
For those who have ever wondered what it might be like to help raise a future assistance dog, this could be the perfect opportunity to get involved.
