Fire De A Muss Muss Tail
This one takes us straight back to early ’70s Kingston, inside the Tuff Gong studio. It’s the original version of the Wailing Souls’ Fire De A Muss Muss Tail, recorded before the Channel One cut most people know. Fire De A Muss Muss Tail first came out in 1976 on a super rare US pressing on the Makossa label, and original copies don’t come around easy.
No artist is listed, but the voices give it away. This is the Wailing Souls, clear as day. Smooth, rootsy, locked-in. And honestly, they are in top form!
The group goes way back. They actually started out in 1966 as The Renegades, with Winston “Pipe” Matthews, Lloyd “Bread” McDonald, and George “Buddy” Haye. By 1968 they’d become the Wailing Souls, and after Haye stepped out, Oswald Downer and Norman Davis joined the ranks.
Things really picked up around 1970 when they linked with producer Lloyd “Matador” Daley. That’s when tunes like Gold Digger came out. Around that time, they were also recording under different names. They used names like Little Roys, The Classics, Atarra, and Pipe and the Pipers. It wasn’t a gimmick, just a way to avoid mix-ups with The Wailers.
And speaking of The Wailers, the connection runs deep. Later that same year, the Wailing Souls recorded at Tuff Gong tunes like Harbour Shark, Walk Walk Walk, You Should’ve Known Better, and, so too, Fire De A Muss Muss Tail. Chances are, some of those Wailers were involved in these sessions.
A song like Fire De A Muss Muss Tail shows how reggae can sound light and easy, but still carry a serious message underneath.
