Too Many Families Protecting Criminals” — Dr. Hilaire Speaks Out After Shocking Killing of Joy St. Omer

Deputy Prime Minister and Parliamentary Representative for Castries South, Dr. Ernest Hilaire, has described the fatal shooting of Joy St. Omer as “really sad,” while issuing a strong warning against what he says is a growing culture of shielding individuals involved in criminal activity.

St. Omer was reportedly shot and killed while inside a vehicle in La Croix on Wednesday night, a tragedy that has intensified national conversations surrounding crime, domestic violence, and public safety.

Speaking on the incident, Dr. Hilaire said the killing has deeply affected the community, particularly given the circumstances now emerging surrounding the case.

“Every death in Saint Lucia is sad and somebody is affected, but that particular case, when you hear some of the circumstances, it’s really sad,” Hilaire stated, expressing sympathy to the grieving family while underscoring the broader social implications of the tragedy.

The Deputy Prime Minister used the moment to renew calls for greater respect for human life and stronger cooperation with law enforcement, stressing that crime prevention cannot be left solely to the police.

“We need again to make that appeal to Saint Lucia for us to respect life, to respect people, and to respect law and order,” he said.

Hilaire also raised concern over what he described as a troubling pattern in which relatives and associates protect individuals allegedly involved in criminal behaviour, only for situations to spiral into violence.

“Too many individuals and families are protecting people who are involved in those kinds of situations,” he stated, adding that “when something dramatic happens, you hear all different kinds of stories.”

The minister further defended the difficult work being undertaken by police officers, noting that law enforcement officials often face public criticism despite operating in increasingly dangerous and complex environments.

“We need the support of the public so the police can undertake their work. It’s not an easy environment,” Hilaire said. “Sometimes you see comments being made by persons who are uninformed, accusing without having the relevant information.”

He urged citizens with information related to criminal activity to come forward and assist investigators, emphasizing that national security is a collective responsibility.

“This is the responsibility of all of us, and we must each play our part,” he said. “If you have information, share it with the police so we can make Saint Lucia a safer place for all of us and for visitors who come to the country.”

Police investigations into the fatal shooting remain ongoing.
