By Breaking Belize News Staff: Two men accused of the 2024 murder of Elwin Rudolph Lewis, also known as “Bobbo,” saw the case against them discontinued in the High Court on Wednesday after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions entered a nolle prosequi.

Travis Jamaal Herbert, 25, a construction worker of Iguana Street Extension, and Robert Emmanuel Arnold, 23, of Antelope Street, Belize City, were jointly charged for Lewis’s murder, which occurred on Friday, March 22, 2024, on Elston Kerr Street in Belize City.

The matter was called on Wednesday morning before Justice Nigel Pilgrim, where the murder trial was expected to begin. However, the Crown indicated that its main witness, reportedly the sole eyewitness to the murder, could not be located. The witness had also previously expressed fear for his life.

As a result, the DPP’s office entered a nolle prosequi, bringing the case against Herbert and Arnold to an end.

Herbert, who was represented by attorney David McKoy, was able to leave court a free man. Arnold, who was represented by attorney Dale Cayetano, remains in custody at the Belize Central Prison in connection with another murder allegation.

Arnold is also accused in the June 3, 2024 murder of 32-year-old Cruz Magana, who was shot and killed inside his home in the Fresh Pond Community, Burrell Boom Village.

Lewis was fatally shot on the evening of March 22, 2024. Police had responded to reports of a shooting near Antelope Street Extension, in front of Gwen Lizarraga High School, where they found a grey Lifan motorcycle, blood, and several expended shells.

Initial police investigations revealed that Lewis, a 43-year-old labourer of Plues Street, Belize City, was riding his motorcycle from the direction of Elston Kerr Street toward Central American Boulevard when two men on another motorcycle allegedly rode up from behind and fired several shots in his direction.

Lewis was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 5:25 p.m.

Police had also retrieved surveillance footage from the area and recorded witness statements during the investigation.
