The Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG) has called on the government to restore the automatic posting of teacher trainees after they complete public colleges of education.
The association said the departure from the policy had created uncertainty among trainees, as only a limited number were likely to be recruited into the Ghana Education Service (GES).
TTAG has therefore demanded the expansion of the current financial clearance by the Ministry of Finance to absorb the 2023 cohort of teacher trainees.
It also called for a directive from President John Dramani Mahama to reinstate the automatic posting policy, as well as the prioritisation of teacher recruitment as a national emergency.
Other demands include the government’s commitment to the automatic employment of newly trained teachers, as outlined in the manifesto of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the adoption of a clear, time-bound plan to clear the backlog.
Addressing a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, the President of TTAG, Mr Divine Nanija, described the recruitment of only 7,000 teachers as unfair to those who might be left out.
“Are they to wait indefinitely? Are they to be absorbed gradually without a defined plan? Or are we, as a country, quietly normalising a future where trained teachers complete their education only to be left in limbo?” he asked.
“This is not just about employment. This is about fairness. This is about trust. This is about the integrity of our educational system,” he added.
Mr Nanija said although TTAG remained open to engagement and dialogue with the government and other stakeholders, it could not remain silent on the issue.
“Ghana cannot afford to train teachers and then abandon them. The future of education depends not just on training, but on opportunity,” he stressed.
