Warri South Local Government Area emerged champions of the maiden edition of the Delta State Councillors Forum Solidarity Cup after defeating Uvwie Local Government Area 3-2 on penalties in a thrilling final at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.
The much-anticipated encounter saw Warri South, winners of the Delta South Senatorial District qualifiers, face Uvwie, champions of Delta Central Senatorial District, in a keenly contested showdown.
Both teams displayed impressive skill, determination, and tactical discipline throughout regulation time. Warri South goalkeeper and Chairman of the council, Hon. Isaac Agbateyinro, was one of the standout performers, making several crucial saves to deny Uvwie from taking the lead. Warri South also created a number of scoring opportunities but failed to convert their chances.
With neither side able to break the deadlock after full time, the final was decided through a penalty shootout, where Warri South held their nerve to claim a 3-2 victory and lift the trophy.
Speaking after the match, Chairman of the Delta State Councillors Forum, Rt. Hon. Ekpemupolo Idukedoumene Samuel, described the tournament as a symbol of unity, leadership, and grassroots development across the state.
He said the competition was more than a football event, noting that it represented the coming together of elected representatives dedicated to serving their people at the grassroots level.
According to him, the tournament was carefully designed to strengthen relationships among councillors from different local government areas and encourage cooperation beyond legislative activities.
Rt. Hon. Samuel also reaffirmed the forum’s support for Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, commending his MORE Agenda and describing it as a blueprint that has brought growth, stability, and renewed hope to residents across the state.
He further expressed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that grassroots leaders have a responsibility to engage communities, build trust, and communicate the benefits of ongoing reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
As a demonstration of their support for Governor Oborevwori’s second-term ambition, the Delta State Councillors Forum donated ₦50 million and pledged to work tirelessly for his re-election, alongside support for President Tinubu in 2027.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the governor, Delta North APC leader, Elder Moses Iduh, thanked the councillors for the gesture and their commitment to the state’s development.
Secretary of the Delta State Councillors Forum and Leader of the Oshimili South Legislative Arm, Hon. Michael Okonji, said the support for the governor’s nomination form reflected the positive impact of the MORE Agenda across all 25 local government areas of Delta State.
In their goodwill messages, Chairman of Oshimili South Local Government Area, Hon. Kelvin Ezenyili, praised the tournament as a commendable initiative that promoted unity and healthy competition among councillors.
Speaking on behalf of the the winning team, the Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area, Hon. Isaac Agbateyinro, and other team members described the competition as a strong unifying platform that brought councillors from across the state together while strengthening collaboration between the legislative and executive arms of government.
