The company behind Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp is rolling out paid subscription services globally as Meta looks to expand beyond its traditional advertising business model.
Global (28 May 2026) – Meta has officially entered the subscription era… and people are not entirely sure how to feel about it.
This week, the company behind Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp announced a range of paid subscription plans that will roll out globally across its platforms. The plans are aimed at users who want additional features, more customisation and deeper analytics on the apps they already use every day.
Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus will cost $3.99 per month each, which is roughly R73 at the current exchange rate, while WhatsApp Plus comes in at $2.99 per month, or around R55. The subscriptions include features like profile customisation, enhanced Story insights, premium reactions, additional pinned chats on WhatsApp and expanded audience tools for creators and heavy users. Meta says more features will be added over time. The company is also beginning to test more advanced subscription offerings under a new umbrella called “Meta One”, which will eventually include creator tools, business tools and premium AI features.
Those AI-focused plans range from $7.99 per month (around R145) to $19.99 per month (roughly R365), depending on the level of access and computing power users require.
For creators and businesses, future plans could include benefits like improved analytics, enhanced visibility in feeds, stronger search placement and additional moderation tools.
Meta’s platforms already have billions of users globally and advertising has long been the company’s primary source of income. Subscription services create another revenue stream while offering optional upgrades to users who want more functionality from the apps.
The company has also made it clear that these new subscriptions will not replace Meta Verified, which remains separate for now.
Still, the reaction online has been interesting.
A lot of users have questioned the idea of paying for platforms that already rely heavily on user data and advertising revenue. Others feel the new features are aimed more at creators, influencers and businesses than ordinary users.
But amongst all the debates online, one comment on my Facebook page this morning stood out.
“Maybe outside of it we’ll start talking to each other, and calling again. That’s beautiful.”
Over the years, social media has changed the way we communicate completely. Messages became faster, reactions became shorter and most of us slowly moved more of our lives online. Maybe this latest shift simply reminds people to think more carefully about how they use these platforms and what they actually value about them. While apps evolve, algorithms change and subscriptions come and go, the important parts of connection have always existed outside of social media anyway.
And there’s some good news from us here too: Good Things Guy will always remain free.
No subscriptions, premium tier or paid membership needed to access the stories that remind us there is still good happening around us every single day. The good things will never sit behind a paywall.
We’ll keep doing what we’ve always done… sharing the stories that matter, celebrating the people doing incredible things and creating a space where South Africans can still feel connected to something positive without needing to upgrade to a premium version first.
