DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government has taken steps to strengthen the medical tourism sector, which is expected to increase the contribution of the health sector to the country’s economic growth as well as attract patients from various countries in Africa and the world in general.
The Coordinator of Medical Tourism at the Ministry of Health, Dr Asha Mahita said this today at the Annual General Meeting of Leading Nurses held in the Dodoma region.

“It has been stated that worldwide, by 2032, the “medical tourism” sector is expected to generate more than 100bn US dollars, a situation that is making various countries continue to invest in quality health services, modern infrastructure as well as systems to attract patients from abroad.” said Dr Mahita
Dr Mahita added that, currently, Tanzania has started receiving patients from various African countries, including Comoros, Uganda, Angola, Malawi, and Zambia, where they have been coming to receive services in public and private hospitals.
In addition, Dr Mahita explained that medical tourism is not just a matter of a patient traveling for treatment, but also includes other important services such as rest, health advice, physical and mental wellness services as well as alternative therapies that help improve overall health.
“There is a difference between patients who come directly to seek services in the country and those who are referred through a referral system from a hospital or other country, with the referral system being cited as an important part of growing the medical tourism sector in the country.” added Dr Mahita
In parallel, Dr Mahita explained that Tanzania has begun to witness an increase in “reverse medical tourism” services where health professionals from abroad come to the country to provide specialized specialist services using local infrastructure.

“There is still a great opportunity to invest in wellness services including meditation, yoga, recreation centers as well as alternative therapies that can increase Tanzania’s attractiveness in the international medical tourism market,” explained health professionals.
In strengthening the sector, health leaders have been asked to assist in the collection of accurate data on international patients receiving services at health facilities in the country to facilitate the planning of better development strategies for the sector as well as increasing its contribution to the national economy
