*Yahya Abdul-Mateen II steps into Man on Fire with a lot on his shoulders, taking on the main character, John Creasy, a role that was made iconic by Denzel Washington. Instead of trying to copy what Denzel did, Yahya takes Creasy and makes the character his own. He brings a different energy to him, one that feels more layered, more vulnerable, and more connected to the pain Creasy carries.
This version of Creasy is still dangerous and intense, but he is also deeply affected by everything he has been through. He deals with PTSD, trauma, and the emotional weight of a violent past. Yahya plays that side of him well, showing a man who is constantly fighting battles in his mind while trying to stay in control. That pain becomes a major part of who Creasy is, but it never defines him completely.
“I had the task of making him incredibly human at the same time. So, when he used those external skills that they still had a sense of soul to all of those movements,” Abdul-Mateen II said when discussing his character.
What makes this character interesting is how he turns that vulnerability into strength. Creasy knows darkness because he has lived through it, and because of that, he knows how to protect people from it. Instead of letting his past destroy him. He uses it to become a protector and someone willing to stand up when nobody else will. He fights for justice in places where justice does not exist, especially against crooked power structures and corrupt governments.
At the center of the story is Creasy becoming the savior for the daughter of his former mentor and previous coworker. That mission gives him purpose and reminds him there is still something worth fighting for. It also shows that beneath all the pain and violence, Creasy still has heart, loyalty, and the ability to care deeply.
“Creasy is the one who can’t accept love, but he can give it from his perspective. He’s like I can protect you; I can lead you,” Abdul-Mateen II told EURweb when describing his relationship with Poe.
Yahya’s performance gives John Creasy a new identity. He respects what came before, but he also builds something fresh. This Creasy is not just an action hero. He is a wounded man, a protector, and someone trying to find redemption through saving others.
Man on Fire streams on Netflix beginning April 30.
