ZANZIBAR: THE Zanzibar government has intensified public education on motor vehicle insurance and insurance rights as part of efforts to improve access to compensation and strengthen financial protection for citizens.
Deputy Minister for Finance and Planning, Dr Hamad Omar Bakari, said the government, through the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation and in collaboration with the Tanzania Insurance Regulatory Authority (TIRA) has been conducting awareness campaigns across the islands.
Speaking in the House of Representatives, Dr Bakari said the campaigns are intended to help citizens understand their rights and obligations regarding insurance.
The deputy minister was responding to a question from Special Seats representative Ms Chumu Kombo Khamis, who sought to know about measures being taken to educate the public and the reasons many citizens fail to pursue insurance claims after road accidents.
Dr Bakari said the awareness programmes are being implemented through mass media, stakeholder meetings, social media platforms and distribution of brochures and specialised training for public transport drivers.
“The government’s goal is to ensure that citizens are fully aware of their rights and responsibilities in insurance matters,” he said.
He identified limited understanding of claims procedures, misconceptions that the process is complicated or time-consuming and lack of key documents such as police reports as among the factors discouraging accident victims from pursuing compensation.

According to the deputy minister, 153 people filed insurance claims through the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation following road accidents in 2025, with 138 successfully receiving compensation after completing the required legal and investigative procedures.
He said the government is working to simplify claims procedures and improve transparency in service delivery to make it easier for citizens to access compensation.
Dr Bakari added that the government will continue monitoring the insurance sector to ensure legitimate claims are processed promptly and in accordance with the law.
The ongoing reforms and awareness campaigns are expected to strengthen public confidence in the insurance system and encourage more citizens to pursue compensation when entitled to do so.
