A Stray Bullet Destroyed Her Laptop… South Africans Helped Change Her Future

Nozipho Sotja’s laptop survived a stray bullet. More importantly, so did her dreams… and now thousands of South Africans are cheering her on as she rebuilds and moves forward.

Mpumalanga, South Africa (15 May 2026) – Nozipho “Nozie” Pretty Sotja had just woken up on Sunday morning. She was sitting on her bed editing a vlog on her phone while her mom played with her baby nearby. Her laptop was lying on the other side of the bed, slightly out of reach, as she planned her day and prepared to film more content later.

Then she heard something hit the roof.

“There was a thud,” she explained. “I assumed it was just a stone or something similar that had landed and fallen off.”

She carried on with her morning, not really thinking about the sound. Until later, when she opened her laptop properly and saw the damage.

A bullet had ripped through it.

And somehow… unbelievably… the laptop still worked.

Her story spread across social media. A damaged laptop. A young woman still trying to continue her studies and creative work despite what had happened. A mother juggling content creation, education and parenting while navigating the realities so many South Africans know all too well. But what made the story so meaningful was not only the shock of a stray bullet. It was Nozipho herself.

Born from a desire to document her own journey, Nozipho started creating content in 2020 while studying anthropology at the University of the Witwatersrand.

“Content creation is something I simply enjoyed doing,” she shared. “While I was studying for my honours, I realised I didn’t enjoy writing, but I would love to journal my journey, where I’m coming from and where I’m going. I started uploading to YouTube because that’s where people were. I wasn’t even looking for growth at that moment. It wasn’t about monetising the content. It was about digitalising my journey in life so that, in the future, I could go back and look at how far I had come.”

Her online platforms started growing as she shared lifestyle content and snippets of everyday life. At the same time, she made the bold decision to pivot from anthropology into data science… all while raising a newborn child.

Interestingly, the laptop sitting on her bed, now with a bullet hole, was already an ASUS. Nozipho had openly shared her love for the brand online long before the incident happened. Followers who watched her content knew she was already using an ASUS laptop for her studies, editing and everyday work. There was a loyalty there that made the story resonate even more as it started going viral.

So when her damaged laptop began making the rounds online, South Africans rallied behind her story. And the calls reached ASUS South Africa too.

“The video of Nozi’s laptop went viral online, and many people actually reached out to ASUS directly after seeing it,” the company explained. “Internally, a number of our employees also flagged the story to management because it was such a powerful and emotional moment.”

“What stood out to us was Nozi’s determination,” ASUS shared. “Even after her laptop had been damaged by a bullet, her first instinct was still to power it on and continue with her studies and work.”

That determination, combined with the authentic connection she already had with the brand, led ASUS South Africa to gift Nozipho a brand-new ASUS ExpertBook, helping her continue both her studies and her growing content career.

And for Nozipho, the impact has already been life-changing.

“This PC has helped me come back into my career,” she said.

ASUS says they continue looking for opportunities to support young South Africans, especially women entering digital and tech spaces. Their previous initiatives have included coding bursaries and partnerships aimed at helping young people access careers in technology.

For Nozipho, this moment is about much more than replacing a broken device. It is about possibility.

“The next big goals are to build projects, apply for jobs and create more content as more people start connecting with me,” she said. “In life, we don’t give up. We keep on pushing. With my content, I want to show people that you can get where you want to go.”

South Africans saw her. A company heard her story. And now a young mother from Mpumalanga has the tools she needs to keep building the future she has been working so hard for all along.

@nozie_pretty Replying to @Nkosingiphile you can get it from @ASUS From a stray bullet hitting my PC… to this. ???????? Huge thank you to ASUS for sending me a new notebook and the beautiful gifts. I’m so grateful. And to everyone who mentioned them under the incident video you made this possible. ???? This is just the beginning of my #B#BecomingNozieourney. Back to building my data science skills, creating content, and chasing the life I prayed for. All by the Grace of God. Kungumusa. ????✨ Stay tuned for more. #asusbusiness #ASUS #becomingnozie ♬ original sound – Adonai_Sax
