African Representatives at FIFA World Cup 2026 – Focus on MOROCCO– Profile, History

Morocco will hope to build on their 2022 run when made history as the first African nation to reach the semis.

Heading to United States, Canada and Mexico, they are buoyed by good form following a decent Africa Cup of Nations campaign where they reached the final on home soil and later rewarded with a trophy despite suffering a 1-0 defeat to Senegal in a chaotic finale in Rabat.

They still have the core of the side that did wonders in Qatar although the coaching staff has changed.

In a group that nearly mirrors that of 1998, they face five-time champions Brazil, Norway and minnows Haiti in Group C.

Head Coach – Mohamed Ouahbi

Ouahbi took over less than four months ago replacing Walid Regragui who made history in Qatar.

The 49-year-old won the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile with the young Atlas Lions defeating Argentina in the final.

How they qualified

They were the first African nation to secure a place at the World Cup topping a group that had Tanzania, Niger and Congo among others.

They collected 24 points, won all their eight matches and scored 22 goals, letting in just two in the process.

Danger man Ayoub El Kaabi led the goal scoring charts in the qualifying campaign on four with Ismael Saibari just behind with 3 goals.

History at World Cup

Morocco’s top scorer at the World Cup

The North Africans’ leading marksman at the global showpiece is Youssef En-Nesyri with three goals.

The two goals came at the last edition where he netted the winner against Portugal in the quarter final adding to an earlier strike in in their 2-1 triumph over Canada.

That strike meant that he became the first Moroccan to register at two editions of the World Cup after having made his mark four years earlier in Russia, where he was on target against Spain in a 2‑2 stalemate in the final round of group matches.

Unfortunately, he has been overlooked for this year’s edition and misses an opportunity to add to his tally.
