Lunatik Returns To His Roots With New Instrumental Project “Try This At Home.” South African producer Lunatik has officially released Try This At Home, a deeply personal six-track instrumental project that sees the acclaimed beatmaker step away from traditional artist collaborations and place the spotlight squarely on his production.
Released through Wav Fiends, the project is described by Lunatik as “an instrumental project & a love letter to the Mid Tempo Era,” drawing inspiration from a sound that shaped a generation while embracing modern influences and contemporary textures.
Rather than creating a nostalgic recreation of the past, Lunatik says the project was built around reinterpretation.
“Instead of being nostalgic, I wanted to give it my own twist & add sounds from the times we’re in,” he shared in a statement accompanying the release.
The producer further explained that each composition was created from “an honest & carefree place,” allowing the music to communicate emotions beyond words.
“For me, music can get across feelings that words can’t. I decided to let it do the talking here.”
For more than a decade, Lunatik has been one of the architects of modern South African hip-hop, helping shape the Skhanda movement and producing records for some of the country’s biggest artists.
With Try This At Home, however, he strips away the vocals and features that have often accompanied his work, delivering a project that relies solely on melody, rhythm and atmosphere to tell its story.
The project’s inspiration lies in the mid-tempo era, a period of music celebrated for its groove, musicality and emotional depth. Rather than simply revisiting those sounds, Lunatik uses Try This At Home to explore what that spirit might sound like in 2026.
Even the track titles hint at a cinematic listening experience. From the warmth and optimism suggested by The SunSeeker to the introspective mood of Winter Nights and the journey implied by Articles De Voyage, the project appears designed to be experienced as a complete body of work rather than a collection of standalone beats
