Aldine ISD Pulls Nimitz Band Shirts After Offensive-Image Complaints

HOUSTON — Aldine Independent School District has stopped the use of Nimitz High School marching-band shirts after students, parents and community activists objected to imagery they said evoked the history of racial violence against Black Americans.

The black shirts depicted a Black figure bound to a wooden stake with fire in the background and included the words “The trial,” according to the Houston Chronicle. The design was tied to the band’s 2026 performance theme, “The Crucible,” a reference to Arthur Miller’s play about the Salem witch trials.

Sheila Adams, Aldine ISD’s chief communications officer, told the Chronicle that the shirts were designed and printed by the Texas Music Festival to coordinate with the UIL-approved competition theme. Adams said district leaders moved quickly after learning about the concerns, stopped distribution and instructed students to return the shirts.

The district is also reviewing how shirt designs are approved in an effort to prevent a similar incident, Adams said. She emphasized the district’s responsibility to provide students with a safe, respectful and welcoming environment.

Community activists Dr. Candice Matthews and Quanell X spoke outside Nimitz High School on Friday, Sept. 18, calling the image offensive and demanding accountability from campus leadership. Matthews said students and families had contacted her about the shirt. The activists argued that the design could not be separated from the history of lynching and other racial terror experienced by Black communities.

The controversy underscores the importance of examining how artistic themes are translated into school materials, particularly when imagery involving race, restraint or fire may carry historical meanings beyond the original creative concept. While “The Crucible” centers on the Salem witch trials, families objected to placing a Black figure in such a scene on apparel worn by students.

Aldine ISD’s decision means the shirts will no longer be used by the band during the current marching season. The district had not announced any personnel action in the statement reported Friday.

Nimitz High School is located in north Houston and serves students in Aldine ISD. The school’s official website identifies the band as a central part of campus life and school spirit.
