Belize City landlord remanded after being busted with gun at property; Says he was only there do to renovations

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City landlord who claimed he was only at one of his rental properties to do renovation work has been remanded to prison after police allegedly found a gun and ammunition inside the building.

Thirty-four-year-old Thomas Samuel Ferguson, a construction worker of #6695 Electric Avenue, appeared unrepresented before newly appointed Magistrate Neeshad Mohammed in Court #7, where he was arraigned on charges of keeping an unlicensed firearm and keeping unlicensed ammunition.

Ferguson pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Police allege that on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, officers attached to the Gang Intelligence, Investigation and Interdiction Unit were on mobile patrol in the Saint Martin’s area, which falls under the current State of Emergency, when they received information that a male person was in possession of a firearm at a residence on Electric Avenue.

Officers proceeded to #6035 Electric Avenue, where they reportedly met Ferguson. Police say they informed him that a search would be conducted for illegal drugs, firearms and ammunition.

According to police facts, during the search, officers lifted a large rug in the living room and found a black 9mm pistol concealed underneath. Police say the firearm had no visible serial number. A magazine containing 15 live 9mm rounds of ammunition was also allegedly found.

In court, Ferguson told the Magistrate that he does not live at the searched property and is only the landlord. He said one tenant lives in a back room and another male tenant had recently moved out.

“I am the landlord. One tenant lives in the back room and one other male rented it and recently moved out. I went to renovate the place,” Ferguson told the court.

Magistrate Mohammed explained to Ferguson that his explanation sounded like a possible defence, which he would have to raise at trial.

Due to the nature of the firearm-related offences, Ferguson was denied bail by the Magistrate’s Court and was informed that he would have to apply for bail at the High Court, as the lower court cannot grant bail in such matters before 90 days.

Police say they have since issued an all-points bulletin for the tenant, whose identity is known to them but who remains at large.

Ferguson was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until June 10, 2026.
