Can PUP’s Aaron Mai unseat 4-Term Mayor Earl Trapp in San Ignacio and Santa Elena?

By Zoila Palma:  PUP councillor Aaron Mai has officially declared his candidacy for Mayor of San Ignacio and Santa Elena Towns, setting the stage for a high-profile electoral contest against long-serving incumbent Earl Trapp.

Mai has served as a councillor since March 2021 and rose to prominence following the 2024 municipal elections, when he became the only PUP councilor remaining on the San Ignacio/Santa Elena Town Council after the UDP secured six council seats along with the mayoral post.

An educator by profession, Mai has built a reputation for community engagement and development-focused initiatives. His work has included projects such as school support efforts like the picnic table drive, alongside other local development programs in the Twin Towns.

In launching his campaign, Mai has emphasized themes of transformation and long-term planning, stating: “Without clear vision, the people perish! The time has come for meaningful change that will take us into a more sustainable future. Together we can.” His campaign has also promoted what it calls “The Master Plan to a greater San Ignacio and Santa Elena.”

But, 4-term Mayor Trapp has confirmed he will seek a fifth term, highlighting his long tenure and record in office. “From the moment I got into office almost twelve years ago, I’ve been working. That has not stopped,” he said, adding that residents are “enjoying the developments that have come to this community under my tenure.”

Mayor Trapp has expressed confidence in his leadership and work trajectory in San Ignacio and Santa Elena Towns.

With both candidates now officially in the race, voters will ultimately decide whether continuity or change will define the future leadership of the Twin Towns.
