By Zoila Palma: Residents of Dangriga Town have taken another step toward sustainable living following the distribution of home composting bins under the Belize Solid Waste Management Authority’s Recycle Organics Program.
The initiative officially reached Dangriga on Saturday, May 23, 2026, as residents gathered at the Dangriga Town Council Chamber to receive composting bins and participate in hands-on training.
The distribution and workshop, held from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., formed part of the continued expansion of the Recycle Organics Program across Belize. Prior to the event, the Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (BSWaMA) prepared and packed materials for successful participants, with the program aimed at encouraging households to adopt environmentally responsible waste management practices.
During the session, residents were trained on how to properly compost food scraps and other organic materials at home.
Participants learned techniques for transforming organic waste into nutrient-rich compost that can be used in gardens and landscaping, while reducing the amount of waste entering the national waste stream.
BSWaMA said the initiative represents an important effort to promote composting and environmental responsibility within communities.
By diverting food and yard waste from disposal sites, participating households contribute to lowering methane emissions and supporting a cleaner environment. The authority emphasized that composting not only benefits individual households but also strengthens broader environmental protection efforts across Belize.
The authority expressed appreciation to Mayor Robert Mariano, Councilor Martha Robinson, the Dangriga Town Council, the Recycle Organics Team, Environment and Climate Change Canada, and the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management for their support in making the initiative possible.
Special recognition was also extended to Solid Waste Technician Anthony Mai Jr. for his work and assistance during the distribution and training activities, which BSWaMA said have contributed to the success of the program nationwide.
BSWaMA thanked the residents of Dangriga for participating in the initiative and taking what it described as an important step toward sustainable living.
