Daweh Congo – Ghetto Skyline
NEW VIDEO
After about four years out of the spotlight, Daweh Congo came back in early 2009 with Ghetto Skyline, a 13-track set that felt like a proper return. This one followed Health & Strength, and was the result of linking up with Swedish musician/producer Jonahgold.
Right from the start, the album’s title track pulls you in. It’s classic Daweh Congo—deep, meditative, and full of that unmistakable voice. Once it hits, it doesn’t let go. And now, all these years later, that very tune finally gets the official video it always deserved.
Looking back, Daweh’s career has always moved at its own pace. He stepped onto the scene in the mid-’90s with Breadwinner, produced by the legendary Alton Ellis. Then came a string of strong singles such as Study Garvey, Coconut Chalice, No Peace, that really put his name out there, especially through Barry O’Hare’s X-Rated label. When his debut album Militancy dropped in 1997, it hit deep. A new wave of Rastafari-minded reggae fans connected with it straight away. You could hear that Burning Spear influence, but Daweh brought his own voice and spirit to it.
Still, he never rushed his output. Over the next ten years, he kept things minimal. Just a few albums, a few singles. Not the most prolific, but always meaningful when he did step forward. So, when Ghetto Skyline arrived, it once again showed reggae enthusiasts what he’s capable of.
You listen to it and wonder why he never fully claimed a top spot in modern roots reggae. The talent was always there. Still is. Hopefully this video puts him back on reggae fans’ radar and sparks a fresh run of recordings.
