Two Bulawayo women have appeared in court following their arrest for allegedly attempting to smuggle crystal methamphetamine (mutoriro) valued at US$22,000 to South East Asia.
The two are Michelle Mupati and Locadia Ndlovu.
They are facing charges of dealing in dangerous drugs.
Prosecutors allege they concealed the narcotics inside hippopotamus sculptures and tried to send them via FedEx.
Mupati is also facing a separate count after allegedly attempting to ship another consignment on her own.
The State alleges that on March 21, 2026, the pair worked together to export the drugs after sourcing them from an unknown supplier. They reportedly bought four hippopotamus sculptures from Bulawayo City Hall, drilled holes into them, and hid the drugs inside before sealing them to resemble the original structure.
“The accused wrapped the sculptures in newspapers and proceeded to FedEx Bulawayo, where they dispatched the parcel addressed to a recipient in the Philippines,” the State said.
Police in Harare reportedly intercepted the parcel on March 23, 2026, following a tip-off. The shipment was seized before leaving the country, leading to the arrest of the two suspects in Bulawayo on April 10.
The court heard that the sculptures were later opened in the presence of the accused, leading to the discovery of crystal methamphetamine inside. Tests confirmed the substance, which weighed 1 112 grammes and was valued at US$11 120.
In a separate charge, Mupati allegedly attempted to send another consignment of the same weight concealed in a leather folder, which was also intercepted before dispatch.
The two are expected back in court Tuesday for bail hearing.
