Durban water supply interruption: eThekwini warns of planned shutdown affecting multiple areas

The eThekwini Municipality has advised residents and businesses across Durban of a planned water supply interruption that will affect areas supplied by the Southern Aqueduct bulk water system.

The shutdown is scheduled for Tuesday, 23 June, from 06:00 to 18:00, as part of ongoing infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving the reliability of water supply across the municipality.

DURBAN AREAS SET TO EXPERIENCE WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION

According to the municipality, its Water Operations Unit will undertake a planned shutdown of the Southern Aqueduct bulk water infrastructure to allow contractors to carry out preparatory work for the new Southern Aqueduct Pipeline Project.

The work forms part of the ongoing upgrade of the 24-kilometre Southern Aqueduct bulk pipeline, a major infrastructure project intended to strengthen water security and improve long-term service delivery in affected communities.

“The shutdown will allow for the scouring of relevant sections of the aqueduct and enable contractors to undertake planned tie-in works between the existing pipeline and the newly constructed Southern Aqueduct pipeline,” the municipality said.

It is anticipated that all work will be completed on Tuesday, with the system expected to be restored by 18:00.

The municipality added that technical teams will continuously monitor reservoir levels throughout the shutdown period. Depending on water demand and available storage, some reservoir outlets may be temporarily closed to preserve water reserves and minimise recovery times once the system is brought back online.
