Elderly Santa Elena woman seriously injured in Hillview Hit-and-Run; driver reportedly released on bail

By Breaking Belize News Staff: An elderly woman was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle in Hillview, Santa Elena, on Friday night in what is being described as a hit-and-run incident. According to initial reports, the woman was riding her bicycle and wearing a reflective safety vest when she was knocked down. She sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to hospital, where she remains under medical care.

Reports indicate that the driver of the vehicle, a Hillview resident, allegedly fled the scene after the collision but was later detained by police after officers went to the individual’s home. It is also being alleged that the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident and had a child in the vehicle. The driver was subsequently granted police bail on Sunday.

The injured woman, described by residents as a well-known and hardworking Christian community member, is now facing significant medical expenses and uncertain long-term health complications due to the head injuries sustained.

 She reportedly works caring for an elderly person and was known for taking precautions when cycling at night, including wearing a reflective vest to ensure visibility.

Family members are now calling for justice, stronger charges, and assistance in covering the victim’s medical costs.

They have also expressed concern over the driver’s release on bail, while stating that no support has been offered toward the victim’s recovery.

As of now, Santa Elena police have not yet issued an official report on the incident.
