Ethio telecom CEO Frehiwot Tamru and Ericsson Senior Management have officially launched a landmark project to modernize and expand a total of 1,899 mobile sites across the South (SR), South West (SWR), and South West West (SWWR) regions. This historic kickoff operationalizes the strategic agreement signed at MWC Barcelona, cementing a synergy designed to accelerate Ethiopia’s digital transformation.
CEO Frehiwot Tamru characterized the milestone as a “game-changer” for the nation’s digital infrastructure and connectivity landscape. She remarked that this mutually beneficial project is a decisive step toward unlocking new growth opportunities and delivering a world-class customer experience through future-proof digital infrastructure. She further underscored that the initiative will foster inclusive socio-economic growth, ensuring every citizen benefits from a digitally empowered Ethiopia.
Reaffirming their commitment to execution excellence, Ericsson’s senior management pledged to meet Ethiopia’s digital demands through energy-efficient and climate-resilient technology. This deployment minimizes the environmental footprint while building a formidable foundation for a sustainable and inclusive digital economy.
The project transitions legacy systems into state-of-the-art infrastructure, deploying 4G LTE in 171 new towns and upgrading 117 existing ones, expanding the national footprint to 1,283 LTE-covered towns. In the three targeted regions, 4G population coverage will skyrocket from 44.25% to 95.45%, while capacity surges to 23.2 million subscribers. Nationally, this contributes a transformative 9.17% boost to LTE population coverage, reaching 89.85%.
By continuing to expand high-impact modernization projects, Ethio telecom ensures an enhanced customer experience, coverage, and reliability. These initiatives provide the robust digital backbone necessary to bridge digital gaps and accelerate the all-inclusive digital transformation of Ethiopia.
