The Metal and Allied Namibian Works Union (Manwu) has announced that Furnmart & Home Corp Namibia employees will start their strike for salary increments and housing allowances on Monday.

This action follows a vote in which 467 employees supported a strike due to the failure to reach an agreement on salary increments and housing allowance terms.

Over 630 votes were cast across all 51 branches, where 157 voted against the strike.

In a letter seen by The Namibian on Friday, Manwu Khomas regional coordinator Petrus Ekandjo informs Furnmart’s general manager, Dewald Ludeke, that they will be demonstrating on 22 June and hand over their petition to him at their head offices.

“You are hereby notified and requested to avail yourself on the mentioned date, time and venue supra to receive the employees’ petition,” the letter states.

Manwu acting secretary general Angula Angula told The Namibian on Tuesday the strike is a result of wage negotiations that started in August last year that did not yield satisfactory results.

He added that the company offered the workers a salary increment of 5%, one day off per month and safety boots for drivers and general shop assistants.

Meanwhile, the workers demanded a salary increase of 8%, one day off per month, a housing allowance of N$500 and safety boots for drivers and general shop assistants.

“The two items that were not agreed upon were the salary increment and housing allowance, which were revised throughout the conciliation to the salary increment of 5% and housing allowance of N$300,” he said.

According to Angula, the matter was referred to the labour commissioner in December.

He added that conciliation started in January.

“Even then the matter could not be resolved, and a certificate of unresolved matters was issued to both parties. In May both parties went for strike rules at the Office of the Labour Commissioner, which was agreed upon,” he said.
