*A vacation along Egypt’s Red Sea coast turned fatal for a German tourist earlier this month after a cobra bit him during a live snake show at his resort hotel in Hurghada.
According to PEOPLE, the 57-year-old man, from the Unterallgäu region of Germany, was traveling with two family members when the incident occurred. The resort had staged a snake show for guests featuring two cobras, during which the snake charmer moved through the audience encouraging guests to handle the snakes and drape them around their necks.
During the show, the cobra found its way into the man’s clothing and struck him in the leg. The venom took effect quickly — he needed emergency resuscitation at the scene before being rushed to a hospital, where doctors were unable to save him. He has not been publicly identified.
German authorities have launched a formal investigation into the death, led by the Memmingen Criminal Police Inspectorate and overseen by the Memmingen Public Prosecutor’s Office. Egyptian authorities are also involved in the probe. At this stage, the snake charmer has not been named as a suspect. Toxicological results are still pending.
Per Britannica, the Egyptian cobra is one of the most venomous snakes on the continent, found across semiarid regions of northern and eastern Africa, the western Arabian Peninsula, and parts of southern Africa. The species carries deep historical significance — it is depicted on the crowns of ancient Egyptian pharaohs and is widely believed to be the asp associated with Cleopatra’s death. Despite its deadly reputation, the Egyptian cobra has long been a fixture in snake charming performances, where handlers provoke the snake into a defensive upright posture and rely on the speed of their reflexes to avoid its strike.
The World Health Organization estimates that between 81,000 and 138,000 people die worldwide from snakebites each year.
