Gugu Gumede’s performance in ‘The Polygamist’ earns praise!

South African actress Gugu Gumede delivered an impressive performance in the first episode of the highly anticipated telenovela The Polygamist on Netflix, which aired on 12 June.

GUGU GUMEDE’S PERFORMANCE ON ‘THE POLYGAMIST’ EARNS PRAISE

The Polygamist has viewers on the edge of their seats, with many gasping at the riveting storyline. The telenovela boasts 22 ambitious episodes, and it is produced by Stained Glass.

Besides the great production and the brilliant performances of other actors, it was Gugu’s performance that viewers mostly raved about.

They said that her somewhat limited acting range on SABC 1’s Uzalo almost dented her career as she portrayed a much older character, MaMlambo, for so long.

According to Netflix, Gugu plays the character of a “social media darling, Joyce [Gomora] is the picture of marital perfection — until her cheating husband’s [Sdumo Mtshali] conquests ignite a scandalous emotional meltdown.”

Other cast members include Sdumo Mtshali, Celeste Ntuli, who is also making waves on radio, Kenneth Nkosi, Kwanele Mthethwa, and Sthandiwe Kgoroge, among others.

Below are the lavish compliments that Gugu received on X (formerly Twitter).

Melo_Malebo commented: Not to be dramatic, but Uzalo almost robbed us of this level of acting. Gugu Gumede is putting on a masterclass in The Polygamist on Netflix.

_Asemahle_n wrote: Gugu Gumede’s mother would be proud of her daughter’s stellar performance.

TeeBhelekazi added: Basically… Uzalo introduced her, but The Polygamist showed the world what she’s really capable of. We nearly missed out on seeing Gugu Gumede at her best because Uzalo kept her in one lane for so long. A 10/10.

BODY TRANSFORMATION YIELDS POSITIVE RESULTS FOR GUGU

In June 2026, Gugu, the daughter of the late politician Zanele Magwaza-Msibi, shared how her plus-size figure contributed to casting directors typecasting her as an older woman.

“When I was 24 years old, I got a role that was the biggest role of my career. I played that role for so long and so well that people never believed my age,” she said.

“I continued to play characters that were much older for the reminder of my career. That was until I made the decision to change my life and get a gastric sleeve,” she added.
