Efforts to improve healthcare at the Bordelais Correctional Facility have been ongoing for the past year, with expanded medical services now fully in place, according to Health Minister Moses Jn Baptiste.

“I want to announce that medical services at the Bordelais Correctional Facility will be strengthened,” the minister said.

Jn Baptiste explained that the initiative is intended to ensure compliance with the Correctional Services Act, which mandates that inmates receive appropriate medical care. He also noted that improving services within the facility should reduce the number of transfers to public hospitals.

“We want to ease the burden on the St Jude Hospital and also the Millennium Heights Medical Complex, the emergency and outpatient clinics,” he said.

As of this week, the health management information system at BCF is fully operational, allowing inmate health records to be integrated with the national primary care system.

Specialist clinics are also being expanded, with some services increased in frequency and others scheduled monthly.

“Internal medicine every first Thursday that we started about a year and a half ago will be strengthened. Dermatology every second Friday, we started in December of last year and we are going to strengthen this. Ophthalmology every fourth Tuesday and this is ongoing,” the minister explained.

Officials say the improvements aim to ensure more comprehensive care for inmates while relieving pressure on the country’s already stretched public health system.
