International military leaders join Belize for 45th Independence flag raising ceremony

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Senior military officials from across the Caribbean and beyond joined Belize in celebrating its 45th anniversary of Independence with a flag raising ceremony at Memorial Park in Belize City.

The ceremony formed part of a series of activities organized by the Belize Defence Force involving visiting military partners and invited guests.

Among the international representatives participating in the Independence celebrations were Brigadier Carlos A. R. Lovell, Chief of Staff of the Barbados Defence Force, and Warrant Officer Class One Leroy Chase, Force Sergeant Major of the Barbados Defence Force.

The delegation also included Brigadier General Miguel Maldonado Castro of the Honduran Army, Brigadier Mahatma Williams and Captain David Hutchinson of the Jamaica Defence Force, and Colonel Donald Henley, Canadian Defence Attaché in Mexico.

The Belize Defence Force said the raising of the Belizean flag represents the country’s sovereignty, national identity and journey since attaining Independence in 1981.

The wider programme began Friday with a welcome reception in Belize City, followed Saturday by the graduation of the Jungle Warfare Instructors Course 01/2026.

Visiting military representatives also travelled to Caye Caulker for a cultural and heritage experience that included an excursion along Belize’s reef.

The BDF said the activities provide an opportunity to celebrate Independence while strengthening relationships and military cooperation with Belize’s international partners.
