By Zoila Palma: The United States has imposed new sanctions on Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, his wife, and three other individuals in the latest move by the Trump administration to increase pressure on Cuba’s leadership.
The sanctions, announced on Thursday, also target Alejandro Castro Espín, the son of former Cuban President Raúl Castro, and his son, Raúl Alejandro Castro Calis.
The measures immediately drew condemnation from the Cuban government, AP reports.
The sanctions come amid escalating tensions between Washington and Havana.
U.S. President Donald Trump has expanded sanctions against Cuba and has repeatedly criticized the island’s leadership. The new penalties freeze any assets the sanctioned individuals may have within U.S. jurisdictions, as well as assets that may come under U.S. control.
However, analysts have questioned the practical impact of the measures, noting that it is unlikely the targeted individuals possess significant assets in the United States.
The latest actions follow a period of mounting economic hardship in Cuba. The island has been facing severe blackouts, food shortages, and a deep economic crisis.
Trump has suggested that Cuba is already experiencing a collapse, telling reporters that the country is “starving” and lacking energy, oil, and financial resources. He also indicated that the United States would address the situation after concluding its military operations in Iran.
Cuban President Díaz-Canel strongly criticized the sanctions, accusing the Trump administration of making new threats against Cuba and seeking to strengthen the longstanding U.S. blockade.
In a statement posted on social media, Díaz-Canel said the measures were intended to escalate tensions between the two countries and harm the Cuban people. He vowed that Cuba would continue to resist external pressure and confront what he described as aggression from the United States.
