Saint Lucia’s future calypso and soca stars delivered impressive performances at the 2026 National Primary Schools Calypso and Soca Competitions, with organisers praising the quality of talent on display and expressing confidence in the future of the island’s cultural heritage.

The competition, held on Wednesday, June 3, at the Mindoo Phillip Park in Marchand, brought together primary school students from across the island to compete in two of Saint Lucia’s most treasured carnival art forms. At the end of the showcase, Soca Storm of Ave Maria Girls’ Primary School captured the Soca title, while Mr. Personality of Dugard Combined School emerged victorious in the Calypso category.

In the Soca Competition, Zizi & Kiki of the Carmen Rene Memorial School secured second place, followed by I-Scream of the Ciceron R.C. Combined School in third and Little J of the Camille Henry Memorial School in fourth.

Meanwhile, Ti Jean of the Canon Laurie Anglican School placed second in the Calypso Competition, followed by Unique of the Anglican Infant School in third place and Mighty Informer of the Ave Maria Girls’ School in fourth.

Chair of the Carnival Planning and Management Committee (CPMC), Tamara Gibson, said she was encouraged by the enthusiasm shown by both participants and supporters throughout the event.

“It’s really encouraging to see the youngsters out here today. They came out to support their schools. They’re very involved. They’re following everything that’s happening on stage. And I love to see that. I think the future of Soka and Calypso in St. Lucia is extremely promising,” Gibson said.

She also commended the efforts of the training team, particularly Curriculum Officer for Music Jason Joseph, for helping to prepare the students for the competition.

“Mr. Jason Joseph has been working very very hard behind the scenes with the students and we can see that today with the quality of the music, the songs, the use of the stage and just the readiness of the students for this competition,” Gibson noted.

“I think we have a really good product here and we can send any of these students out regionally to represent Saint Lucia and they will make us proud.”

Fresh from his victory, Calypso champion Mr. Personality admitted that he had not expected to walk away with the top prize.

“I felt like I would place second or third or fourth. I would not place. But I actually placed and I got first,” he said.

Soca champion Soca Storm encouraged aspiring performers to remain dedicated to their craft and build confidence through practice.

“Practice, know your song, know yourself, and just practice in front of people, don’t be shy, get used to your song,” the young performer advised.

The National Secondary Schools Calypso and Soca Competition is scheduled for Friday, June 5, at the Mindoo Phillip Park from 10 a.m., where another group of young performers will have the opportunity to showcase their talent as part of the 2026 Lucian Carnival season.
