Kenya Eyes First OpenAI Academy in East Africa Following Ruto–Sam Altman Talks

Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto has revealed that he held discussions with Sam Altman on the sidelines of the G7 Leaders’ Summit, focusing on expanding collaboration in artificial intelligence and digital transformation. The talks centered on positioning Kenya as a key player in Africa’s emerging AI ecosystem and strengthening the country’s digital capabilities.

A key proposal discussed was the establishment of Nairobi as the home of the first OpenAI  Academy initiative in Eastern Africa. The initiative would aim to expand AI education, equip learners and educators with advanced digital skills, and support the development of a new generation of AI talent. The move would further reinforce Kenya’s reputation as one of Africa’s leading technology and innovation hubs.

During the meeting, President Ruto emphasized the importance of leveraging emerging technologies to create economic opportunities for young people and accelerate innovation across the continent. He highlighted the need for Africa to play an active role in shaping the future digital economy rather than simply adopting technologies developed elsewhere.

The discussions reflect Kenya’s broader ambition to become a regional leader in artificial intelligence, digital skills development, and technology-driven economic growth. If realized, an OpenAI Academy presence in Nairobi could provide significant opportunities for students, educators, entrepreneurs, and developers across Eastern Africa, while strengthening collaboration between global AI leaders and the region’s growing technology ecosystem.
