BET is entering a new era, and it’s bringing some serious firepower along for the ride. The network announced its first-ever Board of Advisors, assembling a group of six cultural icons, business leaders, and industry visionaries to help guide the company through its next chapters.
The inaugural board consists of Queen Latifah, LL Cool J, BET founder Bob Johnson, NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Troy Vincent, Lazard President Raymond J. McGuire, and George Cheeks, chair of TV Media at Paramount Skydance.
According to BET, the group will offer “insight, perspective, and accountability as BET expands.” The announcement arrives just weeks before the BET Awards and in the middle of broader structural changes that have been reshaping the company from the inside out.
BET President Louis Carr made clear that the board’s purpose goes beyond optics.
“BET has always been more than a platform,” Carr said in a statement. “It is a cultural institution with a responsibility to serve, reflect, and advance our community. As we enter this next chapter, this Board brings together leaders whose influence, perspective, and integrity will help ensure we continue to honor that responsibility while building what comes next.”
There have been changes at BET since Scott Mills stepped down as CEO last December after 23 years with the company. BET+ is also expected to be phased out over the next few weeks, with the streaming service’s content moving over to Paramount+, following Paramount Skydance’s buyout of Tyler Perry‘s 25 percent stake in the streamer in March.
With a new advisory board, BET seems to be serious about stabilizing and strengthening its identity as it navigates new ownership dynamics and an evolving media landscape.
This year’s BET Awards will be hosted by Druski and will air Sunday, June 28, on BET.
