The world chess governing body Fide has elevated Malawi to developmental level three, a status Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) president Mpilo Mizere yesterday described as a significant milestone in the game’s transformation.
Fide classifies national federations into five development levels with Level
one being the highest and Level five being the lowest.
“This achievement reflects the growing capacity of Chessam in delivering impactful development projects and the hosting of international events that raised the profile of Malawi on the global chess stage,” said Mizere.

“This milestone also reflects the tremendous progress made by the chess community through increased tournament activity, growth in schools, stronger administration, increased participation, expanded sponsorship support and a significant increase in the number of girls’ participation across the country.”
According to a Fide statement, Malawi has moved from level four, which comprises emerging federations with growing chess structures, and has upgraded to a higher level with strong growth and activity alongside Zambia, Nigeria and Kenya.
The best African nation in terms of chess development is South Africa, which is in level two. Level one has leading nations India, China and the US.
The Fide statement explains that Malawi qualified for level three because of the steady development of chess structures, the growth of organised competitions at regional and national levels.
“Improved governance, increased player registration, stronger youth development programs and broader inclusion initiatives have also contributed to this. The expansion of girls’ playing chess and school chess programs has been, particularly, important in demonstrating sustainable growth and development,” it reads in part.
As part of our continued development, Mizere said Malawi now has four layers of administration, namely, Chessam, regional leagues, eight zones being set up and chess academies.
“The three regional leagues operate at the same administrative level and play a critical role in coordinating chess activities within their respective regions. Our vision remains making Malawi a chess-playing nation,” he said.
