*Comedian Michael Che has publicly criticized the “Roast of Kevin Hart,” adding to ongoing debate over the Netflix special’s tone and creative team.

Che addressed the special on social media following its release, Variety reports. His comments touched on both the comedic direction of the program and how its writing teams were assembled. In an Instagram post, Che discussed what he sees as differences in comedic approaches, writing, “White guys and Black people joke different. Black guy roast like, ‘look at this n—- shoes!’ White roasts are like, ‘Slavery, math, slain teens, sex crimes, slurs, family secrets.’ White guys don’t give a fuck about they shoes.”

The remarks were widely interpreted as referencing the shocking racial humor from the event. Portions of the special sparked backlash online after several comedians discussed topics including slavery, lynching, violence, George Floyd, and other sensitive themes.

Che was originally scheduled to take part in the live event before withdrawing due to scheduling conflicts tied to his work on Saturday Night Live. He later questioned the composition of some writing teams associated with the production and their lack of diversity.

“Let’s do a roast celebrating the career of the most successful Black comic in the last 10 years,” Che wrote in a separate post. “I love that! Who should we get to write it?” He included an image featuring several white writers linked to Shane Gillis’ set, adding, “C’monnnnnnnnn… that’s not funny?”

The “Roast of Kevin Hart” credited a total of 17 writers overall, with production notes indicating that multiple Black writers were involved in various segments.
