Prime Minister backs DPP decision to drop cyberbullying case against Alberto August; Warns politicians to be careful

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño says he supports the decision to refer the cyberbullying case against UDP political activist Alberto August to the Director of Public Prosecutions, after the DPP advised that the charge be discontinued and August’s devices be returned.

The case arose after August was detained over a social media post ridiculing then Police Minister Oscar Mira. Breaking Belize News reported that August was detained following a satirical post connected to Mira and the murder of Dr. Naum Bonilla.

The DPP advised that the charge be discontinued and that August’s devices be returned. Police later confirmed that the prosecution would be discontinued and retained property returned.

Briceño said the Cybercrime law was passed under the previous UDP administration and that the Attorney General has advised that parts of it may be unconstitutional. He said amendments could be brought to the next House meeting.

The Prime Minister also warned that politicians must avoid creating the impression that they are using the state to go after political opponents. He said public officials may pursue private legal action if they believe they have been defamed, but should be careful about involving state power in political disputes.
