Rassie Erasmus Adds Another Major Honour to Remarkable Rugby Legacy

Springbok coach, Rassie Erasmus, has been awarded the National Order of Ikhamanga in Gold for his inspirational leadership and contribution to South African rugby success.

South Africa (20 May 2026) – Back in 2024, Rassie Erasmus walked across the stage at North-West University to receive an honorary doctorate, recognition for far more than just trophies and rugby results.

Now, two years later, the Springbok coach has added another major honour to an already remarkable journey after being awarded the National Order of Ikhamanga in Gold by the Presidency.

The Order of Ikhamanga is one of South Africa’s highest honours and recognises citizens who have made exceptional contributions in fields including sport, arts, culture and literature.

According to the Presidency, Erasmus was recognised for his “inspirational leadership in national and international rugby that has propelled the Springboks to repeated Rugby World Cup championships.”

The Presidency further noted how those victories helped unite South Africans and elevated the country’s standing around the world.

For many supporters, that is exactly what makes Erasmus’ story resonate beyond rugby itself.

From unforgettable Rugby World Cup moments to the emotion of seeing South Africans from different backgrounds celebrating together, Erasmus has become closely linked with some of the country’s biggest sporting memories.

Mark Alexander, president of SA Rugby, said the honour was richly deserved.

“On behalf of SA Rugby, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Rassie Erasmus on the announcement of his receiving the Order of Ikhamanga in Gold. This prestigious honour is a fitting recognition of his outstanding contribution to rugby and to the promotion of social cohesion in our country.”

And while Erasmus is unlikely to enjoy the spotlight for too long before turning his attention back to rugby, the latest recognition adds another chapter to a career that has become about far more than just winning matches.
