Ten feared dead as DR Congo bound Boat goes missing in Lake Tanganyika
The boat was heading to the town of Kazimia in the territory of Fizi within the South Kivu Province in the Eastern Parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), when it disappeared.

Nearly ten people are missing, with some feared dead after a motorized passenger boat on which they were traveling, went missing on Lake Tanganyika.
Early reports say it probably capsized and sank in the deep waters.
The privately owned vessel which is Christened HB-YESU NI KIMBILIO reportedly sank in Africa’s deepest lake while making a cross-border trip from Kigoma, in Tanzania, sailing to the port of Kazimia in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
According to initial reports, from both Kigoma in Tanzania and Kalemie in DRC, the accident occurred on Friday, the 18th of September 2026.
The ‘HB – Yesu ni Kimbilio,’ boat had departed from the port of Kibirizi in the Kigoma Region carrying nine passengers, members of crew and a cargo consignment.
The boat was heading to the town of Kazimia in the territory of Fizi within the South Kivu Province in the Eastern Parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), when it disappeared.
The people on board were Tanzanians and DR Congo Nationals.
The exact circumstances leading to the sinking of the vessel remain to be determined.
The particular spot where the boat could have sank is also not known.
Other reports say the victims issued SOS calls for help through their mobile phones before they went offline.
Some observers say the boat had left the port with more cargo than it could possibly sustain on the currently turbulent Lake Tanganyika and maybe it was the reason behind the accident.
Apparently Bad weather, including rains and strong winds are being experienced in the Western Peninsular of Tanzania as well as Eastern DRC, including on the Lake between them.
So far, a rescue team has been deployed to the area to carry out search operations in an attempt to locate the wreckage, the equipment, and to rescue any possible survivors.
A contact in the area, identified as Byobe Malenga who is a journalist, said he was closely following up on the ongoing development regarding the boat accident in Lake Tanganyika.
