Here’s a delicious blast from the past! Plus, the recipe for it. Because you’ll be hit with cravings after this one.
South Africa (20 May 2026) – Just as pap, mielietert, koesiesters and braaibroodtjies are South African staples, so is this one.
It goes by many names. Some call it ‘smudge’, others grew up calling it ‘surprise’ or ‘biscuit blocks’ — but its common name is… Marie Biscuit fudge!
Every school day was made better when you had a R2 to bargain with the fudge girl at school. Or when an ouma or auntie would lovingly make them for you.
The simple but deadly delicious combination of Marie Biscuits, butter, icing sugar, cocoa and eggs is unmatched.
The video below, shared by Lemmermade on Facebook, includes the full recipe for Marie Biscuit fudge. So you can live out your childhood joys. The post has racked up over 1.2 million views.
Here’s the recipe and method:
Sidenote: Got the ick over raw eggs? Add your eggs to the hot melted butter, sugar and cocoa mixture first, before adding the rest of the ingredients — this will allow the eggs to cook partially in the warm mixture.
Enjoy!
