*President Donald Trump abruptly ended a contentious interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” after a heated exchange with moderator Kristen Welker over election fraud claims, creating one of the most dramatic moments of his second term media appearances.

The roughly 39-minute interview, taped June 5 in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, aired Sunday and covered a wide range of issues, including the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict, the economy, Jan. 6-related controversies, and election integrity. But it was the final segment on elections that ultimately led Trump to remove his microphone and walk off the set, according to USA Today and other outlets.

From Iran To Election Claims

The interview began with discussions about the escalating conflict with Iran, where Welker asked Trump whether the United States was officially at war.

Jan. 6 Fund Sparks Debate

Welker pressed Trump on whether he was backing away from the proposal following bipartisan criticism and comments from administration officials.

Trump indicated he still supported compensating people he believes were mistreated.

“Look, if it was up to me, I’d pay them the kind of money that they deserve,” Trump said.

The president also defended many individuals connected to the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol and repeated claims regarding federal involvement.

Welker immediately challenged him.

“There’s no evidence of that, sir,” she said.

“Try looking at the tapes one time!” Trump shot back.

The exchange foreshadowed the sharper confrontation that would soon follow.

California Elections Become Flashpoint

The conversation then shifted to domestic issues, including controversy surrounding a proposed “anti-weaponization” fund that critics feared could direct money to Trump supporters who claimed they had been unfairly targeted by previous federal investigations.

The interview reached its breaking point when Welker questioned Trump about his continued assertions that elections are being manipulated.

“The election was rigged. It was a dirty election,” Trump said, referring to the 2020 presidential contest. “And it’s happening again right now in California.”

Welker then asked the question that became the defining moment of the interview.

“Do you have evidence to support that?”

“All I have to do is look,” Trump responded.

“But that’s not evidence,” Welker replied.

Trump has repeatedly cited California’s lengthy ballot-counting process as proof that something improper is occurring. The state’s vote-counting procedures often continue well after Election Day because officials must process large volumes of mail-in ballots, provisional ballots, and ballots requiring signature verification or correction.

Election officials have maintained that the process is designed to maximize accuracy and voter participation. As counting continued following California’s June primary elections, some Democratic candidates improved their standing as additional mail ballots were tabulated.

Trump, however, argued that the delays themselves were evidence of wrongdoing.

Walkout Ends Interview

As the exchange intensified, Trump turned his criticism toward Welker and major news organizations.

“They’re crooked just like you’re crooked, your press is crooked,” Trump said. “Meet the Press is crooked. And so is ABC and CBS and CNN.”

Welker pushed back.

“To be fair, I’m not crooked.”

“Really?” Trump replied. “Well, you play right into their hands then. You’re either crooked or you’re stupid.”

Moments later, Trump signaled that the interview was over.

“You’re a one-sided crooked network,” he said. “Sorry. Let’s call it quits because I’ve had enough. Thank you, darling. Have a good time.”

Welker attempted to continue the conversation.

“Mr. President, let’s — please, I traveled all the way to Wisconsin.”

Trump was unmoved.

“I sat in the rain with you for an hour,” he responded. “And I’ve given you enough time. You ought to straighten out your press. A country can never be great with a dishonest press.”

Trump then removed his microphone and left the interview.

Media Trust And Election Confidence

The confrontation quickly went viral, drawing sharply divided reactions online and across the political spectrum.

Supporters praised Trump for pushing back against what they viewed as hostile questioning from mainstream media outlets. Critics argued the president again promoted allegations of election misconduct without presenting evidence when directly challenged.

The clash also highlighted broader debates over media trust, election administration, and public confidence in democratic institutions. California’s vote-counting process has long been a target of criticism from some Republicans, while election administrators insist the slower pace reflects verification safeguards rather than fraud.

Although the interview ended abruptly, Welker later noted that Trump agreed to participate in another sit-down in the future.

For now, the Wisconsin encounter stands as another high-profile chapter in Trump’s ongoing battles with the national media, one that once again placed questions of election integrity, public trust, and political polarization at the center of the national conversation.
