Twins die after a fire breaks out at informal settlement in Jhb

A fire at the Zamimpilo Informal Settlement, west of Johannesburg, has claimed the lives of four-year-old twins and destroyed almost eight shacks.

The fire broke out Tuesday morning during a targeted raid by soldiers and police officers in the area.

Community members allege that some foreign nationals fled when law enforcement arrived, leaving a stove unattended.

The fire is believed to have spread rapidly through the informal settlement.

The twins were allegedly left alone inside the shack when the blaze broke out. A 42-year-old man who attempted to rescue the children was injured and has been admitted to hospital.

Resident Amanda Ntuli says community members have repeatedly raised concerns about conditions in the area.

“We no longer have hope because we have been complaining so many years. This is not the first time, if there is no action we have to take actions ourselves because there’s no more we can do. If government cannot hear us, so who is going to hear us?”
