Uganda Airlines, Boeing sign Shs 3.7 trillion  aircraft deal

President Yoweri Museveni has witnessed the signing of a Shs3.7 trillion aircraft acquisition agreement between Uganda Airlines and Boeing, marking a significant step in the national carrier’s long-term expansion strategy.

The agreement was signed by Uganda Airlines chief executive officer Girma Wake on behalf of the national carrier, while Boeing was represented by its senior vice president for Commercial Sales and Marketing, Brad McMullen.

The deal covers the purchase of 10 aircraft, including both passenger and cargo planes, aimed at strengthening the airline’s operational capacity and extending its global reach.

Officials say the planned fleet expansion is expected to boost trade, tourism and investment, while positioning Uganda as a regional aviation hub.

Uganda Airlines currently operates two Airbus A330-800neo aircraft on long-haul routes and four Bombardier CRJ-900LR jets serving regional destinations. The airline recently added an Airbus A320-200 on a short-term wet lease arrangement to support growing demand.

In recent months, the carrier has expanded its international network, including the launch of direct flights to London Gatwick—its third destination outside Africa after Mumbai and Dubai.

The airline now serves 17 destinations across Africa, the Middle East and Asia, as it steadily builds its route network.

Under its strategic plan, Uganda Airlines intends to acquire additional mid-range aircraft such as the Airbus A320 and A321neo, alongside long-haul Boeing Dreamliners to strengthen intercontinental operations.

Plans are also underway to venture into cargo transport, with proposals to acquire a Boeing 737 freighter and a Boeing 777 freighter.

Future expansion targets include Accra, Jeddah, Riyadh and Cape Town, as the airline works towards a projected network of between 32 and 35 destinations over the next decade.

Officials say the Boeing agreement, once fully executed, will enhance the airline’s competitiveness and support its ambition to become a key player in regional and international aviation.
