Spencer Strider was looking to have a bounce-back start after losing his previous start in Cincinnati on May 31. Strider went five innings and gave up seven hits and three earned runs (four overall runs) during his time on the mound. On Saturday, the Knoxville native picked up another win after going five innings and giving up three runs.

The Braves got off to a much better start than they did on Friday, going ahead 2-0 following RBIs from Ozzie Albies (sac fly) and Austin Riley (single).

Braves first baseman Matt Olson struck out during his first two at-bats of the game. Both at-bats came with at least one runner on base. There were two runners on base in the sixth inning of Friday’s game when he struck out, then, too.

The score would be 3-0 after a double-steal by Albies and Mauricio Dubon, the team’s hottest hitters, led to Dubon scoring. The Pirates grabbed another run back when Nick Gonzales drove in Bryan Reynolds with a single to left field. The two hits and a walk to Oneil Cruz were the most traffic Strider saw all game. Pittsburgh closed the fourth inning with the score 3-2 after Tyler Callihan, the Pirates’ eighth-hole hitter, drove in a run. Cruz was thrown out at home plate after Olson got a relay from Acuna, Jr. in right field and threw him out.

With Acuna, Jr. on first in the fifth inning, Olson muscled a single to left-center field to move Acuna, Jr. to second. That put runners on second and third for Albies following another double-steal. Albies’ sac fly made the score 4-3.

Dom Smith’s two-run home run in the next at-bat moved the Braves ahead 6-3. The home run was Smith’s sixth of the year.

Dylan Dodd came into the game to relieve Strider and start the sixth inning. After striking out two Pirates and walking Cruz on full count, he struck out Endy Rodriguez to end the inning. The Pirates catcher struck out three times on Saturday.

The game ended with Tyler Kinley pitching in the eighth, and Raisel Iglesias closing the door in the ninth.

No Michael Harris II today:

Michael Harris II was out of the starting lineup on Saturday. Harris II was pulled from the game for the ninth inning on Friday night. After the game, Braves manager Walt Weiss said he experienced a bit of back tightness and was pulled for safety reasons.

What’s Next:

Following the conclusion of the series with Pittsburgh on Sunday, the Braves will travel to Chicago and New York to play the White Sox and the Mets. The Braves will return to Truist Park to host the San Francisco Giants and Milwaukee Brewers from June 16-21.
