Emotional Siya Kolisi bids Sharks farewell amid ‘massive pay cut’
A 'massive pay cut' awaits Siya Kolisi at the Stormers after he bid the Sharks goodbye over the weekend...
Despite leading his team to victory, an emotional Siya Kolisi apologised to Sharks fans in his final match for the club. The rugby star, who is also the Springboks captain, will join the Stormers in July to be closer to his family.
The Sharks beat their Italian opponents 54-19 on home ground at the Kings Park Stadium.
EMOTIONAL SIYA KOLISI SAYS SORRY TO SHARKS FANS
Speaking after the match, in which he scored two tries, Siya Kolisi apologised to the Sharks fans for a disappointing season.
He said: “We’ve disappointed the fans…I’m grateful [but] I’m sorry that we couldnt achieve more. We achieved way below standard for the talent that we have.
He added: “I’m glad I could be part of it a little bit”.
Siya added that it had been an “emotional day”.
Thanking the Sharks family and fans for their support, he added: “It’s been a chapter of my life that I will cherish”.
‘MASSIVE PAY CUT’
Siya Kolisi will return to the Stormers, his home club, in July.
In a statement late last year, he said of the motivation for his move from KwaZulu-Natal to the Western Cape: “My family is in Cape Town, and it is important to me to be close to them. This move gives me the chance to do that while also giving back to the team and fans who made such a big contribution to the player and person I am today.
He added: “I am looking forward to contributing in any way I can to the future success and happiness of this special club and its incredible supporters”.
However, Stormers boss John Dobson claims that Siya Kolisi has taken a “massie pay cut” in his sacrifice to return home. The Springboks captain is also not guaranteed a starting line-up.
Speaking in a recent interview, he said: “Siya was desperate to come back and made a massive financial sacrifice to be here. That gesture is appreciated.
“He said all I want to do is play for the Stormers and come back to Cape Town. When you have a Springbok captain who has made a great contribution to the country, make that gesture; it would be unfair to him to reveal the numbers, but that showed where his heart is. There is not one element of financial gain.”
