Twenty-four-year-old Mitchel Jean, was fatally shot in Barre St. Joseph on Friday May 29, 2026. According to residents, Mitchel was shot near the Barre St. Joseph Community Centre. Despite suffering multiple gunshot wounds, he managed to cross the road before collapsing near a few houses.
He was rushed by ambulance to the OKEU Hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Jean’s mother, Christina Jean, said that the loss of her son has left her struggling to eat and sleep noting that he was her youngest child and only son.
“Like today, I am just waiting for him to come because I don’t believe my son is gone, no. It’s when the day finishes and I don’t see him, I will say, yes for true, my son is gone.”
Mitchel’s tragic death marks Saint Lucia’s 36th homicide for the year 2026, forcing yet another family to grapple with the agonizing reality of gun violence.
Christina described her son as a “loving” presence in her daily life. She stated that the bond they shared was extraordinarily close.
“My heart and his heart are just like one.” she said.
According to Christina, her son made it a priority to check on her every single day.
“He would come and visit his mother every single day, and every problem he had he would share with me,” she recalled.
“I will miss seeing him every day, asking me if I am okay.”
Christina emphasized that despite their daily talks, Mitchel had never mentioned being in trouble or having any conflicts. She stated that she is unable to comprehend why anyone would want to take her son’s life.
Christina shared that Mitchel spoke to her about a strange restlessness he was feeling the morning before he died. She explained that he told her that something was not right with his spirit. Hours later, those unsettled feelings culminated in violence. However, she said that she has faith that the police will catch the perpetrator/s.
