Gov. Brian Kemp has ordered state legislators back to Atlanta for a special session that will tackle voting district boundaries and election administration issues ahead of future statewide elections.
The special session is scheduled to begin June 17 at the Georgia Capitol and follows the conclusion of this year’s regular legislative session, which ended in early April. Since lawmakers were not expected to meet again until 2027, the governor’s order creates an additional legislative window to address the issues.
One of the primary focuses will be updating Georgia’s electoral maps for the 2028 election cycle. State lawmakers hold responsibility for determining and adjusting district lines used in elections across Georgia. In addition to redistricting, lawmakers are expected to address revisions to Georgia’s election operations tied to a 2024 measure involving paper ballots and the use of QR codes in the voting process.
