*A discussion about coalition politics took a tense turn at the recent Ohio Black Expo when Columbus (OH) NAACP President Sean Walton was challenged over his call for “Black and Brown solidarity,” sparking debate online about the future of cross-community alliances and Black political priorities.
Video from the panel discussion, moderated by media personality Phillip Scott (African Diaspora News Channel), shows Walton arguing that solidarity remains a necessary strategy for achieving progress in communities that often lack the political numbers to advance their interests independently.
Audience Reaction Draws Attention
“We’ll never have the numbers. What we can have is that solidarity because our cause is our cause,” Walton said during the discussion. “We all know that we want to be able to eat. We should all be able to eat, to flourish, to be able to be happy in this city.”
Walton went on to say that communities must clearly communicate their priorities to those in positions of power.
The conversation shifted when Scott asked a question that immediately resonated with many in attendance.
“Solidarity with whom?” Scott asked. “Could you describe who we need to be in solidarity with? I’m confused.”
Walton responded: “For me, that’s Black and Brown people throughout the city.”
The answer appeared to land poorly with some audience members.
Video shows attendees reacting with audible murmurs and visible gestures of disapproval following Walton’s response. Several audience members appeared more receptive to Scott’s line of questioning than Walton’s explanation, creating a noticeable moment of tension inside the room.

A Debate Larger Than One Panel
The exchange quickly gained traction online, where viewers have debated whether broad coalition-building remains the best path forward for Black communities.
Supporters of Black and Brown alliances argue that cooperation can strengthen political influence and create opportunities for communities facing many of the same economic and social challenges. They view coalition-building as a practical strategy in cities where demographic changes continue to reshape local politics.
Critics, however, argue that Black organizations should remain focused on addressing issues that disproportionately affect Black Americans, including economic disparities, educational outcomes, public safety concerns, and community investment. Some question whether broader alliances consistently produce measurable benefits for Black communities.
The audience reaction at the Ohio Black Expo suggested that those concerns continue to resonate with at least some members of the community.
Scott Pushes Back
Following Walton’s response, Scott continued to challenge the idea from a political perspective.
“Well, if that’s a numbers game, same problem on the road,” he said, prompting additional reaction from attendees.
The moment underscored a growing debate taking place in Black political and civic spaces about representation, priorities, and strategy.
While the discussion lasted only a few moments, the exchange highlighted a divide that has become increasingly visible in recent years: whether Black advocacy efforts should prioritize broader coalitions or remain focused primarily on Black-specific outcomes.

Online Debate Continues
As clips from the panel continue circulating across social media, reactions remain sharply divided.
Some viewers praised audience members for pressing leaders to provide clearer answers about the purpose and benefits of coalition politics. Others defended Walton’s comments, arguing that collaboration among communities remains essential for achieving long-term political and economic goals.
What is clear from the video is that Scott’s question struck a chord with many in attendance.
Whether the moment reflects a broader shift in public sentiment or simply a disagreement within one audience, the exchange has sparked a conversation that extends far beyond the walls of the Ohio Black Expo.
