New Contemporaries Live takes place on Saturday 11th April (2pm–5pm), bringing together spoken word, performance, live music and choreographed works from artists featured in this year’s New Contemporaries exhibition.

Among the artists performing is Makiko Harris, recently named a One to Watch by the Evening Standard.

One of 26 artists selected for New Contemporaries 2026 (on view at South London Gallery until 12th April, before travelling to MIMA from 8th May), Makiko is currently presenting Sentinel – a sculptural work from her wider Needle Dance series.

As part of the live programme, she will present Needle Dance Live, marking the first time the work has been translated into a live performance.

Originally developed through sculpture and later extended into film, Needle Dance explores themes of fate, femininity and the invisible structures that shape human experience.

The live iteration brings these ideas into choreography, sculpture and sound, with four dancers performing alongside Makiko’s monumental needle sculptures and custom rope costumes, while she performs the original violin score live.
